Denis Rankin - RIP
It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of our Chairman- Denis Rankin.
Denis collapsed and died last Thursday evening whilst doing what he loved most - running in the Mournes. Denis was involved with the Mourne Marathon since its inception in the late seventies - first as both planner and competitor in what was a one day race organised by the NI Orienteering Association then in the two day event organised by Mountain Rescue before he move to organising it himself in 1984. Since then he has steered it faithfully through to success every September (bar 2001, the year of Foot & Mouth). When he wasn’t organising he was climbing, walking and running and competing in events himself.
Denis will be greatly missed by the mountaineering and running community across Britain and Ireland.
His death is deeply regretted by MMM committee members past and present and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family.
th May 2013 ENTRIES NOW OPEN
We are pleased to announce the opening of entries to the 2013 MMM and to welcome back our sponsors, Lowe Alpine and Jackson Sports
If you are new to the event you will find lots of useful information in the ABOUT section of this site. Use the tabs down the left-hand-side of the page to access the sub pages. If you are an old-timer, you might like to skip straight to the ENTRIES section where you will find everything you need to enter. Don't forget you MUST read the Rules, Equipment and Safety pages before entering. There are some changes to this information – eg: around the use of GPS equipment. We have also introduced a Handicap system to the Vet categories in line with other mountain marathons.
Another exciting bit of news is that this year we are using the new Mourne Map from Harvey Mapping. Harveys are one of the leading makers of outdoor pursuits maps and the level of detail, accuracy and clarity on their map allows us to set much more interesting and challenging courses.
The RESULTS section has results, and route cards from previous years so if you are uncertain about which class to enter there is plenty there to help you decide. If you have any questions or need advice please check out the FAQ section or use the forum to tap into the wealth of experience of the MM community. You can also contact us and other MMers through our facebook page and, of course, you can always email us at the address below. We are really excited to be kicking off our 34th event. There is lots of time for training and plenty of endurance events elsewhere throughout the summer. We hope you have a great season in the mountains and that you will join us in September. As usual, there will be some important information releases through the season so once you've entered do please check back with us from time to time.
